In industrial automation, high-precision equipment and transmission systems, ball splines are core components that possess both rotational and linear motion functions. Compared with traditional linear guides and splined shaft structures, ball splines, due to their compactness, precision and durability, are gradually being widely applied in fields such as automated machinery, robots, medical equipment, optoelectronic equipment, printing machinery and CNC machine tools.

The core advantages of ball splines

Achieve high-precision linear motion

In the structure of ball splines, the fit clearance between the spline shaft and the nut can be adjusted by preloading, thereby effectively eliminating the clearance in the rotational direction. This design makes the system more stable during linear motion, with high repeat positioning accuracy and fast response speed, making it highly suitable for equipment that requires high-precision positioning.

In addition, as the balls roll along the R-shaped ball grooves precisely ground, low-friction and high-smoothness linear guidance can be achieved, further enhancing the control accuracy of the equipment.

2. Have the ability to transmit torque

Unlike ordinary linear guides, ball splines can not only achieve linear movement but also synchronously bear rotational motion loads. The balls roll smoothly in the spherical grooves of the shaft, which can transmit rotational torque without sliding and is suitable for complex structures that require synchronous rotation and linear drive.

For instance, in automatic assembly lines, grasping robotic arms or CNC equipment, ball splines can simultaneously drive the actuator to rotate and move forward and backward, greatly simplifying the structural design.

3. Compact design saves space

Traditional rotary + linear motion mechanisms usually require multiple sets of components to cooperate, while ball splines can simultaneously achieve two forms of motion on a single shaft. As the balls run within a closed-loop structure, even in a single-axis mechanism, stability during the rotation process can be guaranteed, preventing the nuts from shifting or shaking.

This structure brings greater freedom to equipment design and is conducive to achieving goals such as modularization, lightweight, and space-saving installation.

4. Strong load capacity and long service life

The raceways of ball splines are usually made of high-strength alloy steel materials. Through heat treatment and high-precision grinding, the R-shaped ball grooves on the rolling surface have an extremely high matching degree with the balls. Therefore, it has a large contact area, more uniform force distribution, and compared with general sliding pair structures, it can withstand greater radial and torque loads, while significantly extending its service life.

Even in scenarios of high-frequency operation, frequent start-stop or high load, ball splines can still maintain a stable and reliable motion state.
